Throughout the third quarter of 2023, the top communication apps on the Android platform in South Africa demonstrated varied performance trends. Here’s a closer look at the weekly downloads, revenue, and active user metrics for each app, based on data from Sensor Tower.

WhatsApp Messenger saw fluctuations in weekly downloads, peaking at approximately 245K in mid-July before dipping to around 99K in mid-August. By the end of September, downloads surged again to 235K. The app maintained a significant user base, with weekly active users ranging from 17.3M to 17.8M throughout the quarter.

WhatsApp Business experienced a consistent increase in weekly downloads, starting at about 46K at the end of June and reaching a high of 95K by the end of September. Active users showed a stable trend, hovering around 700K to 744K.

Snapchat displayed a steady rise in both weekly downloads and active users. Downloads increased from 51K in late June to approximately 90K by the end of September. Active users grew from 2.5M to nearly 2.9M over the same period. Revenue for Snapchat varied slightly, peaking at $349 in late July.

Truecaller: AI Call Blocker maintained stable weekly downloads, with notable peaks at 41K in late August and early September. Revenue saw a peak of $15.5K in late June and fluctuated around $11K to $14K for the rest of the quarter. Active users remained steady, ranging from 2.8M to 2.9M.

Getcontact had an interesting trend in weekly downloads, starting at 22K in late June, and peaking at 46K in mid-August before dropping to 14K by the end of September. Revenue showed a general upward trend, reaching $454 by the end of the quarter. Active users increased from 88K to 135K, then declined to around 101K.
